My Look at East Tennessee
This collection of 21 digital landscape photographs is designed to showcase the beauty of East Tennessee. I feel that these scenes could seem unimportant to the average person; however, to me, they are very significant. As I grow older and consider moving away, these are views that I want to take with me. The collection is divided into three sections meant to show three types of landscapes that embody the region. I hope that through these pictures someone can see East Tennessee how I see East Tennessee. For someone used to a different landscape, it could be possible to see this as home.
The three sections of the collection are farmland, highway, and industrial. I think they each show the local landscape in unique ways. The first 7 pictures are of farmland fields, which I want to convey a feeling of calmness or tranquility. For me, there is a strong feeling of familiarity from the time I spent living on a farm. The next section is highway landscapes. These especially I think could be overlooked, but over the many times I have driven them, I have grown to find them beautiful. When I am driving, I enjoy getting to the perfect perspective to be able to see these views. The last 7 images show industrial structures. I can understand why people could see these as ugly or eye sores, but I think we should appreciate their organic geometric designs. Additionally, I enjoy how their harsh forms contrast the surrounding foliage. I cannot think of East Tennessee without these landscapes. When I think of landscapes that represent my home, this is what I see.

City Tones
The title City Tones has a dual meaning about changing the tones of cityscape photographs. The collection is edited in different ways so that the tones as in the colors change. The purpose of changing the colors is to make a different mood or feeling to create a different tone for the picture. My hope is that when someone is looking at these pictures they notice that they have a different reaction to the different versions of the pictures. I researched common color schemes used in different cities and countries in photography and film to prepare for this collection. Themes like Neo-orientalism and classism influenced some of the color decisions. The overall purpose of this collection is to examine how our perception of an image changes with different editing and colors.
Moment
The inspiration for this collection was a picture I took a few months ago of a friend dancing. I took the picture with a long shutter speed and flashed a light multiple times as the picture was being taken. When the light flashes, her pose is frozen, creating a picture that has a blur of motion of dancing combined with overlapping images of her in the dance. I wanted to expand on this picture with a series using this process. I think this collection acts as a summary of my current state as a photographer. I am primarily a portrait photographer, and I have recently often been utilizing a long shutter speed. This group of pictures combines these two themes in my recent work. As I am currently in my last semester I wanted a way to conceptualize what my art looks like in one collection. I enjoy working with a range of art mediums and within many fields in photography. This collection allows me to have a way of showing what my art looks like to someone who is interested in seeing my art. I am happy to start a new phase of my life after college including a new chapter in my art. I am glad to have a collection that concludes my collage work.
